Summer is just around the corner. In fact, it feels like it’s already here. People are looking forward to warm evenings sitting on the patio, enjoying a glass of wine or a beer, perhaps. With many in some form of lockdown, people are spending a lot more time at home than usual. So, what better time to take a look at your tired decor and give it an upgrade that will make all your Zoom friends jealous?

Here are some favourite summer home decor trends for 2020 to get you in the decorating mood.

Summer Colours

Summer Colors

Switch it up with some eye catching summer shades that will dress up your plain white walls. Fancy yourself as a bold, experimenter? Why not try a lovely shade of coral to add some life to those walls. Or how about sunny marigold? If you’re really brave, why not try flamingo pink?

If you’re a bit more cautious when it comes to colour, subtler shades such as seafoam green, buttercream yellow or pale turquoise are perfect.

And of course, you don’t have to paint the walls to make a statement. To introduce these summer shades a bit more subtly, you could add in coloured furnishings, artwork or furniture. Retro designer Smeg is known for their beautifully eclectic and colourful range of appliances. There are some gorgeous Smeg appliances in shades such as mint green, bright orange or pale blue.

Keep it Light

Stick to lighter shades and motifs when undertaking any decorating work. Steer clear of dark blues, greens and greys. That is, unless you’re contrasting them with lighter colours. Summer is a time where we’re blessed with more and more natural light coming into our homes. So make the most of it by using light colours and furnishings that reflect, rather than absorb light.

Floral Motifs

Floral Motifs

This year, florals are back. As well as filling your home with gorgeous fresh blooms such as dahlias, gerbera, and hydrangea, invest in some floral printed furnishings or wall art to bring some nature and life into your home. Even if you’re not much of a gardener, you can still sit at home and appreciate the beauty of nature from the comfort of your sofa. Think flower patterned cushions, prints, and accessories.

Switch Heavy for Floaty

Time to take down those heavy drapes in favour of lighter, floaty fabrics. Designers are loving sheer, gauzy curtains that let in plenty of light and make you feel like you’re on vacation. It’s all about making the most of that extra light. You can easily find inexpensive sheer curtains online. Longer is better, to the point where they just lightly brush the floor. They’ll make you think of lazy afternoons on the balcony of a stunning Greek luxury villa.

Beachy but Subtle

Nautical and beach themes have shown to be timeless when it comes to summer decor. However, it’s easy to go overboard (pardon the pun) when it comes to nautical accessories and patterns. This year, keep it simple and subtle. The occasional striped cushion or a subtle combination of white and navy will give you the feel of the beach, without getting carried away with shells, rope and fake starfish. For many the beach isn’t an option this summer. So, why not bring the beach to you?
